Comprehensive Coatings Failure Analysis
Pre-mature or unanticipated coating failure can be one of the most frustrating and expensive occurrences facing protective coatings end users. Accordingly, it is extremely important to determine the root cause of the failure and the extent to which it may affect structures, components and processes that the coating was meant to protect and enhance. Most importantly, it must be assured that once the problem is remedied, recurrence of the same errors leading up to the original failure is not repeated. Since the coating was selected, specified, and applied at a prior time by other parties, the investigator must determine application and service conditions, conduct interviews, and carry out field inspections and tests to examine the history of the work and existing condition of the coating system. Follow-up laboratory testing is often required to verify observed conditions.

Each of these steps is required to reach accurate conclusions and to provide economical corrective action recommendations. S. G. Pinney & Associates, Inc. personnel who conduct Failure Analysis investigations are field trained in the handling, application and testing of protective coatings. With the appropriate background information, field-testing, sampling and laboratory analysis, much information can be determined that is not readily observable with respect to determining the root cause(s) of the failure. An "Associate" experienced in the area of presenting expert testimony directs investigations that could lead to litigation. Recommendations for corrective action are documented and based on common sense and judgment developed from direct field experience.
